Square quilt

This is a quilt that when I saw the pattern it called to me. It is a simple pattern; I found when I was looking at some 2005 Australian Patchwork and Quilting magazines. The quilt in the magazine was done in oranges and reds, and strong earth tons. I knew that I was going to make it, but in different colours.

As it turned out we were going to Camore the following weekend to go dog sledding and DH agree to go early so I could go to Sugar Pine. If you ever have the change to go dog sledding you should, it was so much fun. I’m getting side tracked, that could be how I end up with so many UFOs.

Anyhow, I wonder around the store looking for the first fabric, the one that would set the colours for the quilt. I ended up with a Laura Burch horse fabric, I had looked at it a few time, but not that big in to horse, DH told me to use it, I think he just wanted me to hurry up and be done. Quickly picked out the rest of the fabrics. The pattern had said to use contrast and to use some fabric that would be a bit of a surprised. There are a couple of fabrics that I think are really ugly, so I thought that was a surprise. The lady cutting the fabric thought I should use more light fabrics, that I didn’t have enough mix of tones. There where two fabric she felt that I should switch out. The staff they is very helpful and normally I take there advise, but I like the feel of the fabrics I had picked, and knew the look I was going for.

I made the quilt top at a weekend spring retreat held each year in May. I am glad I stuck with my fabric choices; this is the next top on my list to quilt

Quick post

Life has been busy. I have only been home two nights in the last fortnight. Just how life goes. Most things have not been that exiting, just appointments and running around. Did have a couple of evenings doing Calgary corporate challenge events. This is put on every year and companies compete in sporting or fun events. When I signed up for a two of events a couple of months ago it seemed like a good idea. Just the way it worked out made life quite busy.
Did get some more running around done today, picked up a few things, while I was out I managed to get to the LQS. I picked up some border fabric for the table toppers. Could really tell that these are not the colors that I am normally drawn to. I kept looking at the brighter fabrics, and had a hard time finding the softer colors. I think they are pretty, just not what my eye goes to first. I also picked up some batting for a quilt top I made early this year. I don't have a photo, but I will take one to share.
Here is a photo of a small wall hanging that I made earlier this year. It was a kit I picked up a couple of years ago. These things always need to age in the cupboard for a while before I make them. The living area in my house is quite open plan, this is currently hanging on the wall of the walkway past the kitchen.

Last one

Here is the last center for the three table toppers, pretty in pick and blue. I wasn't sure how I would like it, but I think it turned out really nice. Now the I finished the centers I get to shop.

Last night at guide one of the girls showed us how to clear and service our singer 221 sewing machine. So here is my baby freshly serviced and cleaned. It was pretty clean before we started, not that I knew that. I will make a point to keep it up, as I want to keep it running smooth, as its the machine I take to retreats and sew days etc.
The fabric in the front of the photo was a gift for house sitting my friend house. I think its cool. Like that it is cats, but it subtle enough to use any where. I really like it, it so me.

Green table topper

I have been working on my next person boarder round robin quilt. I am finding this one a bit frustrating, I picked what I wanted to go, and am not sure of the best way to do it. I come up with a method and as I am working on it I am sure there has to be an easier way to do it. At least I think its looking good.
Just to have something a bit least of a mental strain, I put together the center of the green table topper, its so soft and pretty. I think I will put the last one together this week, and then have to go to the LQS to pick up the fabric I need to finish them.

Gift Given

Haven't done much quilting in the last couple of days. On Saturday when to visit my friend for her birthday. She loved the Red, B&W quilt. She almost cried when I gave it to her. I manage to snap a couple of photos when she was opening it, and you can just see in her face how happy she is. Its so nice when you give something and you can see how happy the person is to receive it.

Spent most of today in the garden, its been a while since it has been weeded. I like having a nice garden, I would prefer is someone else did the work, but no one has offer to do it for free yet. Here is one of the flowers, I should have waited until after I had weeded to take the photo, the weeds in the background are gone now.

I did decide on what I am doing for the guide challenge, draw it up quickly, so I wouldn't forget, and started on it this evening. I won't be
showing any pictures until I show it to the girls at guide. This won't be until December, but know a couple of them read my blog, so don't want to give what I am doing away.

Here is a quilt photo. This quilt I made a couple of years ago, which is currently hanging in the 1/2 bathroom on the main level of the house. I really like the way it looks on the green wall. Yes it
is just as bright in real life as it is in the photo.

Small Projects

Decided that instead of working on my UFO pile, or starting on one of my new bigger quilts, that I would do a couple of quick smaller projects. Who knows one of these may end up as a secret Santa gift. I found a charm square pack in my stash, I sure I was planning on doing something with it.
Have split it into three by colour for three small projects. I am mixing it with some light tone on tone fabric also from my stash. I think I will need to buy something for boarder. I may find something in the stash. I really need to sore out the stash, I tossed in all in together when I was moving sewing room, and haven't sorted it out yet.

Also need to come up with some thing for a fabric batik square challenge from my guild. We are going to show what we are working on at Christmas. I keep changing my mind as to what I am going to make. At the moment I leaning toward something small, but still lots of time to change my mind.

Finished

I have finished my Red, B & W quilt tonight. I finished the hand sewing at guild meeting. So the girls got to see it before I give it away. I have a week to spare as my friend birthday in not until next week end.
This was started as a B.O.M from Along Came Quilting a couple of years ago. They had a finishing kit, that I didn't buy, it made the quilt bigger than I wanted. I did buy extra background fabric so I could finish it the way I wanted.
Of course I did have "help" from Fritz with the quilting
